eFuels/eSAFs or synthetic fuels made from C02 and hydrogen, is a topic we will focus on and explore as more groups form to push the political agenda forward. ReFuel EU, the law which is enforcing the reduction of fossil-based aviation fuel being produced, does include eFuels in the target and is being included already in contracting approaches between airlines and travel buyers, to the terms for a future planning.
Fly Green Alliance has been discussing how nuclear can be included in the 2033 target for eFuel production, in episode 1 of “In the loop”. The European Commission stating they “do not use the term nuclear as such in the Regulation, and we cross reference to Renewable Energy Directive and Gas Directive for definitions and sustainability criteria. eSAF produced from electricity from nuclear origin is covered by RFEUA. It is covered under low carbon fuels. Article 4 of the regulation 2023/0524 cites that low carbon fuels can count to the achievement of the targets. Low carbon fuels are defined in Article 3 that refers to the energy horizontal regulation.”
We will discuss and explore more in a future episode of “In the loop”. Below the ReFuel EU targets for sustainable aviation fuel and eFuels up to 2050.
